Book Reviews in Academic Journals

Sociology of Race and Ethnicity, published online February 28, 2025.

“Brothers in Grief boldly depicts the lived realities of Black boys. The book’s multidimensional perspectives outline the struggles of students who failed to find consistent support from school officials. It would serve as an excellent resource for graduate and undergraduate courses such as race, gender, crime, law, deviance, education, and social justice and is exemplary of what it means to do a methodologically enriching project while amplifying humanity and compassion. The glossary is well thought out, making what can confuse outsiders accessible and transparent. Gross’ book is approachable and straightforward, and overall, it is a fantastic read, even for those who do not study Black masculinities or Black boyhood.

Ethnic and Racial Studies, published online March 26, 2025

“Brothers in Grief is unique for its humanization of Black boys’ grief… [It] is written for teachers, school administrators, politicians, policy makers, social workers, feminist and gender scholars, scholars of thanatology, parents, educational researchers, and youths. By collapsing the barriers between everyday challenges and structural problems, the book makes a significant contribution to understanding the conditions of violence and grief, thereby animating the precarity of Black life from the unique perspectives of Black teen boys.”

Symbolic Interaction, published online May 28, 2025

“Nora Gross uses poignant storytelling to help describe the depth of grief that Black teenage boys carry after friends and acquaintances die from gun violence. This book is a well-researched exposition on a complex area of grief as it relates specifically to gun violence… This book would be a great addition to classes focusing on grief, death, emotion, social problems, social change, qualitative methods, and introduction to sociology. …[Additionally,] The Author’s Note at the end of the book is an important resource for students and researchers who want to learn more about decisions, emotion work, and identities as part of ethnographic research.”
